FAQs
There are several ways to support the reimagining, refurbishment and reopening of The Belmont Cinema — including supporting our Crowdfunder, making one-off/regular donations, community fundraising, volunteering opportunities and corporate giving.
Visit our How to Support page for more details — all support is appreciated and makes a very real difference.
All donations from the public, including the Crowdfunder, will go into the fund for the capital reburbishment costs of the building.
Our fundraising target is £3.6 million. This target will allow us to reimagine, refurbish, and reopen The Belmont Cinema, and deliver a heritage project that celebrates the rich history of cinema-going in Aberdeen.
Now that we have secured £1.5 million from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, upon successful completion of the development phase, we have raised £2.2 million towards the overall target of £3.6 million for capital refurbishment and heritage project costs.
Work continues to close the funding gap through several fundraising initiatives.
Once the funding target is reached, we are optimistic for a reopening in late 2027.
The Belmont Cinema is owned by Aberdeen City Council, and this will continue to be the case.
Our charity, Belmont Community Cinema Ltd, has agreed a 25-year lease of the building, and will operate it following an extensive refurbishment for the benefit of everyone in Aberdeen.
During extensive surveys, the current Heating and Ventilation System (HVAC) was deemed to be at the end of its operational life. As this accounts for a very large proportion of a cinema's running costs, a new system is essential, not only for reopening but the long-term financial and environmental sustainability.
In addition, refurbishment is necessary to provide an industry-leading environment that is welcoming and accessible to all audiences.
This will include replacing the seating and projection equipment in all auditoriums, much of which is outdated.
